New Year's Tips: Firework Safety

Now, let's talk about the main event of this blog post: New Year's Eve. While we celebrate the start of a fresh year with fireworks and festivities, it's important to remember that our furry companions may not share our enthusiasm for the dazzling pyrotechnics. Here are some essential tips to ensure your dogs stay safe and calm during the festivities:

1. Keep Your Dog Inside

The thunderous noise of fireworks can be terrifying for dogs, and sometimes, cats. To keep them safe and secure, it's best to keep them indoors. Loud noises can startle them, and escaping the yard is not uncommon when they're frightened.

2. Provide a Quiet and Safe Place

Create a cozy and comfortable space for your pet. Set up a quiet room or a secure crate, equipped with their favorite blanket and toys. This designated area will help your best friend feel safe and sheltered from the noisy world outside.

3. Give Them Healthy Distractions & Create Positive Associations

Keep your dog occupied with toys and healthy treats like The Wild Bone Co. Dog Jerky or Walk About Pet Freeze Dried Dog Treats. Rewarding a dog while they hear fireworks is a great way to positively reinforce reacting with calm confidence. Be sure to not reward barking or whimpering, but rather reward during times of calm. As simple as it sounds, your dog will begin to associate firework noises and a relaxed demeanor with getting treats! It's the same concept as teaching them to sit or play dead. Playing calming music can also help drown out the noise and provide a soothing atmosphere.

4. Microchip and ID

Ensure your dog has proper identification, including a microchip and a securely fastened collar with an ID tag. In the unfortunate event that they manage to escape, having clear identification will increase the chances of a safe return.

5. Exercise Earlier in the Day

Before the evening fireworks, make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day. A long walk or an exciting game of fetch will not only tire them out but also encourage them to stay indoors and rest during the fireworks. This doesn't stop at physical exercise either. Mental exercise like trick training or recall practice is actually sometimes more tiring than physical exercise!

Happy New Year from AAPM!

As we celebrate the New Year with our human companions, let's also remember our four-legged family members and do our best to make the transition into the new year as stress-free and enjoyable as possible for them.
