April is Active Dog Month

April is Active Dog Month, a timely reminder of the importance of keeping our furry friends active and healthy. Just like humans, dogs need regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight and overall well-being. Unfortunately, the trend of pet obesity is on the rise, with a staggering 56% of dogs classified as overweight or obese. This concerning statistic underscores the need for pet owners to prioritize physical activity for their canine companions. We do our best to help this issue by making healthy foods and treats, but at the end of the day, exercise is just as important in keeping your dog healthy.

Regular walks are a cornerstone of canine fitness, but the duration and intensity should be tailored to your dog's breed and age. Active breeds may require up to two hours of activity each day, while smaller breeds can benefit from shorter, more frequent walks.

Engaging in interactive play is another effective way to keep your dog active, and is arguably better for them than walks. Whether it's a game of fetch, tug-of-war, or hide-and-seek, these activities not only encourage physical movement but also provide mental stimulation. Introducing new toys, such as squeaky toys, balls, or frisbees, can keep your dog engaged and entertained.

Exploring dog-friendly establishments and outdoor activities can also enhance your dog's exercise routine. Taking your pup along for shopping trips or dining experiences allows them to experience new environments and stimuli while staying active. Additionally, activities like yoga with your dog, known as "doga," offer a fun and bonding experience for both you and your furry friend.

As we celebrate Active Dog Month, let's commit to prioritizing our dogs' health and happiness year-round. Regardless of what activities we choose, incorporating regular exercise into your dog's daily routine can help them live longer, healthier lives. So, lace up those walking shoes, grab your dog's favorite toy, and embark on an adventure together—it's good for both of you!
