Celebrate the Bond Between You and Your Best Friend During National Train Your Dog Month

As we enter the new year, it's the perfect time to celebrate the love and connection between you and your loyal canine companion through training! January marks National Train Your Dog Month, an initiative started by the Association of Professional Dog Trainers to emphasize the significance of socialization and training for dogs. National Train Your Dog Month was established in 2010 to remind pet owners that, like children, dogs require socialization and schooling to become confident and well-behaved companions. At AAPM, we believe this month is an opportunity for dog owners to enhance their best friends' lives by incorporating fun and structure into their daily routines.

Why Train Your Dog?

Training is an important aspect of responsible dog ownership. But training your dog isn't merely about obedience; it includes fun tricks and important socialization. Training is a lifelong commitment that strengthens the bond between you and your furry friend while ensuring their safety, happiness, and good behavior. A well-trained dog will be a great advocate for their breed and dogs in general.

Training your dog not only fosters improved behavior but also provides essential mental stimulation, preventing boredom and destructive habits. It's the key to creating a harmonious living environment for both you and your pet. In fact, mental exercise can be more tiring than physical exercise!

In addition, one of the main reasons many dogs are sent to shelters or given away is due to behavior issues resulting from lack of training. Most dogs aren't naturally going to fall into a human lifestyle without clear instruction and guidance. Unrealistic expectations of dogs often result in unhappy owners, leading to dogs being re-homed or, even worse, sent to a shelter. It is important that dog owners are ready to train and have proper expectations of their canine companion. Dogs won't know what they aren't taught!

Moreover, dog training plays a crucial part in reducing the risk of accidents and injuries. By teaching your dog how to interact with people, other animals, strange noises, and well, anything, it enhances their socialization skills, minimizing potential dangers. In essence, training sets your dog up for a lifetime of companionship and well-being.

Why We Love National Train Your Dog Month

A Helping Hand: This month-long celebration offers support and resources for dog owners who are interested in being responsible and training their best friend.

Health and Well-Being: Dog training is not a luxury; it's one pillar of responsible pet ownership that contributes to your pet's well-being and health, keeping them happy and thriving.

Building a Community: National Train Your Dog Month connects dog owners, dog trainers, and dog lovers, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support.

Celebrate with Activities

Participating in National Train Your Dog Month is a rewarding experience for pet owners and their dogs. Here are some activities to make the most of this special month:

Teach a New Trick: The perfect way to introduce an element of fun into your training regimen is by teaching your dog tricks. Tricks are not only enjoyable but also serve to reinforce basic obedience skills and keep your furry friend mentally and physically engaged. They will learn that they get rewarded for behaviors you are looking for and that listening to you is the most efficient way to get what they want.

These exercises also help stretch and work muscles that aren't typically engaged during day-to-day activities like walking and running. Consider how unnatural "sit pretty" is for a dog. Tricks like this activate muscles that aren't commonly used. And there's nothing like seeing your dog perform a charming trick to earn the applause they deserve!

Socialize your Dog: A common misconception surrounding socialization is that it is limited to dog and human interaction. Socialization includes a lack of interaction as well. The main concept of socialization is comfortability in any situation or environment the dog is likely to experience in the future. It does include interaction with dogs and humans, but it also includes things like the noise of a big truck, the temptation of a running squirrel, or being able to see a fellow pup and calmly not interact with them. If your dog is uncomfortable, afraid, or reactive in certain situations, conditioning them to be calm and confident using positive reinforcement is a fantastic way to celebrate National Train Your Dog Month.

Proofing: Practicing commands and tricks your dog already knows in new situations or environments is called "proofing." For instance, if you only practice coming to you when you call them in your house, there's a chance they will be too distracted to come when called in a different environment. Proofing minimizes risks and helps your dog understand that no matter where you are, or what situation you are in, they still need to obey so they will be safe and happy. So get out to the park, the dog-friendly store, or your friends house and do some training!

Share on Social Media: Share your dog training achievements and challenges on social media. Join the vibrant dog training community and connect with fellow dog lovers.

Good Dog Training Techniques

Positive reinforcement is a the most effective and humane approach to dog training. This technique focuses on rewarding good behavior, making the training process enjoyable for both you and your dog. Here are some tips for successful positive dog training:

Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog with a treat or toy for behaviors you are looking for to reinforce good behaviors and make training enjoyable. Reinforcement, like giving a dog a treat or access to their favorite ball, is more effective in dog training than punishment. It also teaches your dog that it is great to be around you and to listen to you!

Set Your Dog Up For Success: It's much easier to use positive reinforcement in a situation your dog is likely to succeed in! For example, if you have a puppy you are training, minimize puppy distractions like things on the floor that aren't toys. Or, if you have an adult dog who loves other dogs, teaching a new concept at a dog park is probably not the best move. Once your dog grasps the new concept, then introduce other distractions and "proof" the skill! Setting your dog up for success will minimize punishment, like scolding or leash correcting.

Be Consistent: Consistency in your commands and training schedule helps your dog understand what is expected of them. Using different commands for the same behavior or inconsistent training expectations will most likely only confuse your dog.

Be Patient: Dog training requires time, so remain patient and understanding throughout the process. You'll be glad you did!

Resources for Dog Training

If you're looking for additional resources for dog training, there are various options to explore:

Books: Many books provide valuable advice and tips on dog training and behavior.

Online Courses: Consider enrolling in online courses for comprehensive training guidance.

Websites: Numerous websites offer insights and advice on dog training.

Local Classes: Look for local dog training classes in your area to receive hands-on guidance and support.

Our Picks: At AAPM, we understand there are many different approaches to training dogs. Personally, we enjoy and learn a ton from McCann Professional Dog Training and Zak George's Dog Training Revolution. There are many great trainers with valuable information, so use your judgement to discern what works best for you and your furry friend!
